The ration card is a record issued to Indian citizens living below the poverty line and above the poverty line. It grants the people to access needful subsidized food commodities such as rice, wheat as well as subsidized fuel including kerosene and liquefied petroleum gas.

The ration card also acts as a proof of identity as well as a proof of residence. As an example, a cardholder who is seeking a loan from a financial firm can use this card for identity purposes in that it certifies him or her a citizen of India.

Types of Ration Card



Antyodaya Ration Card - The Antyodaya Ration Card is issued to the poorest families having no stable income. Old age men and women, unemployed people, laborers come under this category.

BPL Ration CardBPL Ration Card issued to the families falling under ‘Below Poverty Line’. Families having the annual income less than 10,000* (may vary from state to state), can apply for BPL Ration Card.

APL Ration Card APL Ration Card is issued by the state government to the people falling Above Poverty Line. Everybody can apply for this Ration card, there is no limit of annual income under this category.

Procedure to get a New Ration Card

You may get an application form for making of new consumer card from any Circle Office on payment of 50 paise.

To get a new kerosene oil card you have to fill this application form and duly filled in hard copy and submit at your Circle Office on any working day between 9.30 to 1:00 pm.

Documents Required


  • Three passport size photographs of the head of the family attested by a gazetted officer/MLA/MP/Municipal Councillor.
  • Proof of residence - in a case of owner, Registration Deed, Allotment Letter, Power of Attorney, House Tax Receipt etc.
    - in a case of a tenant, NOC of the landlord or any other relevant document.
  • Surrender/Deletion certificate of the previous card.
Scale of Entitlement

Household consumer cardholders are categorized on the following bases:-
    1. Wheat or rice eater.
    2. LPG or kerosene user
    3. Jhuggi Ration card holder(JRC) & Permanent Ration Card holder (PRC)
The entitlement, subject to allocation from Govt. of India, of each category, is as follows:-

Ration card is the oldest official government document in India. The primary reason behind issuing ration card is to purchase food grains like wheat, rice and sugar and kerosene at subsidized rates.
